Empadronamieno

Once you get your residence and you live in your own or rented home, or you share an apartment with others, you have to go to the town hall (Ayuntamiento) and register. You need to do this for your tax declaration and social security card, as well as to get your nearest doctor assigned (with the social security card).

This process is simple. To register all you need is your passport or NIE number and proof of address (rental contract or property escritura); and the completed registration form that you can get from your local town hall.

Should you not have any of these documents (e.g. because you rent a room in an apartment), the tenant of the rental contract has to fill in a form that confirms you live at this address. Then you can go together with that form and a copy of the tenancy agreement (owner) to register for empadronamiento.

Only people registered at the official Town Hall register (empadronamiento / padrón municipal) can vote. Registering should be one of the first things you do after settling in at the address of the municipality in which you register.

Registering is free of charge.
