Finding a job in Spain

The ultimate key to get a good job and in general to have higher chances for any kind of job in Spain is: the more languages you speak the higher your chances! You should at least speak Spanish and English or Spanish and German. If you speak 4 languages, many doors are open to you! Excellent qualifications or special skills are also a super plus! Your working knowledge and experiences are essential. Computer experiences are highly valued in Spain. Hard-working attitudes and willingness are essential.

Innumerable new expats start a job giving private English lessons, with seasonal work for example for: hotels, tour companies, bars, restaurants, or holiday companies. You will easily find an English media for whom you can sell ads on a commission base. A cash-in-hand-job like working in bars, disco, or in the construction area is another option. If you are young, presentable and hard-working you will most probably find a seasonal work in a bar or restaurant, especially those at the the beachfront promenades of the tourist resorts.

You have many options to work as self-employed starting your own business. Or you buy a business (freehold or leasehold). Be aware that the most popular resorts are saturated with “British Bars” all supplying the same. Many of them go bust within a year after opening. Therefore: offer something people want but that doesn't exist yet in there area where you want to open your business.

Again: language skills essentially determine success. You may live in Spain and use the internet to do online business in your country. Many English speaking people with an educated professional background start teaching English giving private lessons.

For certain jobs you should make sure your professional qualifications will be recognized in Spain. You will need a certificate of "homologisación". Getting such a certificate can take up to 12 months, in some cases more. To find out more, contact the education department of Spanish embassies; or read more about here: www.nairc.org.uk and www.dfes.gov.uk.

The state-run National Employment Institute (INEM) has offices throughout the country, offering jobs. Obviously you need to speak Spanish. For more information: www.inem.es.
